Children on the run have already experienced a lot in their young lives, suffer from post-traumatic stress, and live in great uncertainty in the reception center. Through stories, they can momentarily escape this world. Those who enjoy reading, read better and achieve better results at school. This is why The Story Weaving Workshop, with a team of volunteers, organizes reading activities for children aged 4 to 12 who reside in the asylum seekers’ reception center. They tell stories using kamishibai, provide a diverse range of books, and creatively process the story through drawing, crafting, performing, and discussing.
For the reading activities at FEDASIL Broechem and the Red Cross asylum seekers’ reception center Westakkers, the organization no longer receives subsidies from Literature Flanders. The project in Broechem is no longer supported by the municipality of Ranst. Thanks to the Warmest Week, The Story Weaving Workshop can continue the reading activities for the coming months (until the end of 2024). Through fundraising, the organization aims to gather the necessary resources to continue promoting reading pleasure in the asylum seekers’ reception centers thereafter.
